2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

Starting at a price of $80,395, the
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is out of reach for some of Corvette
enthusiasts. Chevrolet recognized this and to satisfy these
other types of buyers, the automaker is offering almost an
identical model for a cheaper price.  I am talking about
the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport which made a debut at
the Geneva Motor Show last month. The coupe slots between the
top of the range Corvette Z06 and the base Corvette Stingray.
The model is ideally an excellent blend of the Z06 and the
Stingray.

The 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport will be offered in
three variations i.e. a coupe, a convertible and a “Collector’s
edition’. Already the first model in the Collector’s Edition
lineup was auctioned on April 5th with proceedings
going to support cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute. The model fetched $170,000.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Exterior

On the outside, the Grand sport is almost identical to the Z06.
However, some minor features set the Grand Sport apart from the
ZO6.  The Grand Sport features a similar grille design,
headlights, wider fenders, a wider track as well as similar
rear quarter panels.

In fact, to fully differentiate the Grand Sport from the Z06,
buyers will have an option for the Heritage package. This
package introduces hash-mark fender graphics to the Grand
Sport. One can also add full-length stripes. These are offered
on a choice of six colors, two of which are new for 2017, they
are Sterling Blue Metallic and Black Rose Metallic.

Upon closer inspection though, the Grand Sport stands out
thanks to its specific front fender inserts and custom wheel
design.

The Collector Edition on the other hand will be offered
exclusively in Watkins Glen Gray Metallic exterior. There
exterior will also feature Tension Blue hash-mark graphics,
Black wheels and Satin Black full-length stripes.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Interior

Similar to the exterior, the interior of the Grand Sport is
adopted from the Z06.  However, the automaker has added
extra carbon-fiber inserts, a flat-bottom steering wheel
featuring a”Grand Sport’ logo and magnesium seat frame
structure.

Buyers will have a choice between Competition sport seats or GT
seats in any color combination just like on the standard
Corvette. Adding the Heritage package introduces brushed
aluminum trim with hash-marks.

The Collector Edition on the other hand will have a Tension
Blue leather and suede interior trim. It will also have the
original Grand Sport race car image embossed in the seat
headrests.  There will also be an instrument panel plaque
with the same image embossing along with build sequence number
starting with “0001” to “1000.” The automaker also says that
this does not mean that production will be limited to a
thousand units.

Engine Specs and Performance

As I said earlier, the Grand Sport is an excellent blend of the
Z06 and the Stingray. While on the outside and inside it looks
like a Z06, its heart…I mean engine is sourced from the
Stingray. It is a 6.2 L, V-8 LT1 engine good for 460 horses and
465 lb-ft of torque.  The engine is paired with a 7-speed
manual gearbox that features active rev match.  An 8-speed
automatic transmission with paddle-shifters is offered as an
option. The automatic system has been specifically modified for
the Grand Sport.

The automaker has not released performance details. However, we
expect the Grand Sport to accelerate to 60 mph from standstill
in around 3.5 seconds and reach top speed of 195 mph. This
is courtesy of improved aerodynamics and performance equipments
sourced from the Z06.

Performance gear

The model is equipped with an array of performance equipment,
some as standard and others as part of the optional Z07
package. Standard performance features include redesigned
stabilizer bars, magnetic ride control, Brembo brakes and
Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.  The Z07 Package on the
other hand adds Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Cup tires. The model
also features customized cooling systems and a chassis adopted
from the Z06.

Price and release date

The 2017 Corvette Grand sport Coupe will have a starting price
of $66,445 MSRP. The Convertible will be more expensive with a
msrp $70,445 price tag. The automaker did not reveal the price
of the Collector Edition models but don’t expect it to be too
expensive from the coupe and the cabriolet.

Competition

The Porsche
911 Turbo would have been the 2017 Chevy Corvette Grand
Sport’s biggest rival but the model which also made a debut at
the concluded Geneva Motor Show has already sold out all its
991 units even before they reach dealer showrooms, this
considering the fact that is way expensive at $184,900. Other
rivals are Audi R8 and

Dodge SRT Viper.
